There are four basic table positions when sitting at a poker table;
The Dealer position, Early position, Middle position and Late position.
Dealer Position
The dealer position is known as being “on the button”. This is the best position to be in, as you are the last player to act in each round of betting. In this position you can be a little loose by playing more marginal starting hands.
Early Position:
Players in the three seats to the left of the dealer are said to be in the early position. This is considered to be the worst position in poker, since you have to act first without knowing how any of the other players are going to play their hands. In this position you are left with very little to no information. Only play the very best of starting hands if you are in early position.
Middle Position:
The very next three players to the left of early position is known as middle position. In this position you get to see how the early position players act, but you also have players behind you that are waiting to play their hands. You can play a little less than the best starting hands in this position, but be careful.
Late Position:
Next we have late position. This is the best position to be in except for “on the button”. This position is described as the three players to the right of the dealer. In this position you can gain the most information of how the other players have played their cards. As in the dealer position you can play more marginal hands here. Also if you sense that no one has anything worth betting, you can place a medium to large size bet here and expect everyone to fold.
