Hand Rankings

Below are the various combinations of poker hands that rank from five of a kind (the highest) to no pair or nothing (the lowest):

Five of a kind - This is the highest possible hand and can only occur in a game where at least one card is wild. An example of five of a kind would be four kings and one wild card or three aces and two wild cards.

Royal Flush - This is the highest possible hand when no wild cards are used. A royal flush is the A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit.

Straight Flush - This is the next highest possible hand. A straight flush consists of five cards of the same suit and also in sequence, such as 8,7,6,5,4 of spades.

Four of a Kind - This hand ranks just below a straight flush. An example of four of a kind would be four queens or four tens.

Full House - This next hand is made up of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. An example of this would be three sevens and two aces. This hand is also known as a “Full Boat”.

Flush - Next is a flush where all five cards are of the same suit, but not all in sequence. An example is K, 9, 7, 3, and 8 of hearts.

Straight - All five cards in a sequence, but not all of the same suit is a straight. An example is J, 10, 9, 8, and 7.

Three of a Kind - This is when you have three cards of the same rank, such as 9, 9, 9, 4, and 2.

Two pair - This hand contains a pair of one rank and another pair of a different rank. An example would be K, K, 2, 2, and 7.

One Pair - This frequent hand contains a pair of one rank and the remaining three cards of a different rank. Such as A, A, 7, 4, and 2.

No Pair - Lastly we have no pair. This hand contains nothing or none of the above aforementioned hand rankings. When no one has a pair or higher, the player that has the highest card wins. An example would be when player “a” has A, 2, 4, 7, 9 and player “b” has K, Q, 10, 5, 7. In this case player “a” has the highest card and would win.

Two hands that are identical, are considered tied since the suits have no rank in poker.
