Follow the Queen

Back to Poker Games

Queens or Follow the Queen is a poker variation of seven-card stud poker. Although the queens are not wild, they help determine wild cards when they are turned up. To play Follow the queen you’ll need at least two players and a standard deck of fifty-two cards.

Follow the queen opens with an predetermined ante by all players, and the dealer deals two cards, one at a time, face down, to each player. Next the dealer deals the third card (door card) face up to each player. If a queen is dealt face up during the deal, the dealer immediately flips the next card up to the center of the table. This card then becomes a wild card, along with the other three cards of the same rank, for all players. For example, if the dealer turns up a seven following the queen being turned up, all sevens become wild. The dealer continues to deal out the rest of the cards for that round.

Players evaluate their cards, and the one with the highest card showing begins the round of betting. The player can either bet or fold his hand and play will continue clockwise. If the player bets, the next players will have the option of matching the bet, raising the bet, or folding. Next the dealer will deal a fourth card face up to all players that didn’t fold their hand.

Play and betting occurs twice more, with the dealer dealing one card face up to each player before each round. If another queen is turned up, the next card dealt becomes a wild card and replaces the original wild card. The dealer now deals the last and final card (seven total) face down to each player, and a final round of betting occurs, followed by the remaining players showing their hands. The player holding the highest ranked five-card poker hand wins.

Variation: Some players like to make the queen and the following card wild. This increases the amount of possible wild cards to eight.
