In most variations of poker, you ante before the cards are dealt. Some games call for a “forced bring-in”, this is where a player is required to bet in order to start the action; in seven-card stud, the player with the highest door card has to make the required starting bet. In games like Texas Hold ‘em and Omaha, there is blinds.

After the antes, bring-ins and blinds a player has four choices during their turn to bet:

Check: This is when you pass the betting on to the next player if there are no bets previously placed by another player. This is basically making a zero or no bet.

Call: This occurs when a player adds enough money to the pot to cover all of the previous bets made by players who acted prior.

Raise: This is when a player calls the previous bet and adds an additional bet greater than the original bet.

Fold: This is when a player discards the cards that were dealt to them. The player then loses any antes and bets made previous.

There are three main types of poker betting.

The first is table minimum/maximum. This is where the players bet or raise is limited to the table minimum/maximum.

Next is Pot limit, this is when a players bet or raise is limited to the current pot value at the time of the bet.

Finally there is No-limit, this is when a player can bet or raise all his chips or money at any time. This is the most popular type of poker played in large tournaments.
